DELANCEY STREET

About 37 percent of the homeless population in Minnesota has a mental illness, yet there are far too few resources dedicated to helping these people address the root causes of their homelessness and bring stability and housing into their lives.

Delancey Street engages people who have long histories of homelessness compounded by problems of mental illness and substance use. The program helps homeless individuals achieve increased levels of stability and satisfaction with their lives, while encouraging the autonomy of independent living. The goal is to help people break the cycle of homelessness; improve their health and self-reliance, in a way that is more cost effective for government.

This program is part of a five-year demonstration project which grew out of a state-wide, public/private collaborative planning effort undertaken to address the complicated needs of those with long histories of homelessness. Hearth Connection contracts with Guild Incorporated to provide a full continuum of services and supports to eligible participants.

About Delancey Street:
Delancey Street, on New York City’s Lower East Side, became home to individuals and families who were establishing roots in America during the late 18th century. Guild’s Delancey Street encompasses Ramsey County and strives to be the same oasis of hope for its participants.

Features include:

  • Getting to know each participant in order that services can be tailored to fit the diverse and distinctive needs and preferences each person has.
  • Taking a collaborative, strengths-based approach to foster a spirit of hopefulness and belief in each person’s ability to grow and change.
  • Focusing on the "practical" - helping participants solve problems and get through barriers.
  • "Housing first..." so that participants have a safe, affordable home in which to live and from which they can pursue their aspirations and dreams.
  • Integrating services and treatment for individuals who face multiple problems (e.g., chemical dependency /substance abuse and mental illness), using a harm reduction model.

Eligibility Criteria:
Delancey Street serves:

  • Single adults whose homelessness is exacerbated by other difficulties such as medical problems, mental illness, chemical dependency, and histories of trauma.
