DELANCEY STREET
Over half (52%) of adults experiencing homelessness in
Minnesota report a recent diagnosis or treatment for serious mental
illness, yet there are far too few
resources dedicated to helping these individuals address the root causes of
their homelessness and bring stability and housing into their lives.
Delancey Street
engages people who have long histories of homelessness compounded by problems
of mental illness and substance use. The program helps homeless individuals
achieve increased levels of stability and satisfaction with their lives,
while encouraging the autonomy of independent living. The goal is to help
people break the cycle of homelessness; improve their health and self-reliance,
in a way that is more cost effective for government.
Started in 2003 as a pilot project to demonstrate the
potential to reduce long-term homelessness for the "most marginalized"
single adults, Delancey Street is now a provider for the Metro Long-Term
Homeless Supportive Services Project in the seven-county metropolitan
area in Minnesota.
